THE Arecibo Message
1974年にアレシボ電波望遠鏡の改装記念式典において宇宙に送信された電波によるメッセージである。
このメッセージは地球から約25,000光年の距離にあるヘルクレス座の球状星団M13に向けて送信された。
メッセージは1679個の2進数表現による「ビット」から成っている。
この1679という数は23と73という二つの素数の積であり、23×73または73×23の2通りしか素因数分解できないことから選ばれた。
すなわちこのメッセージは、解読者が信号の2進数列を2次元の四角形に並べ替えることを意識して作られている。
このメッセージを23行73列に並べ替えても意味のある図形にはならないが、73行23列に並べ替えると右図のように認識可能な図形となる。

重大な秘密とはカトリック最大の秘密と言われる「ファティマ第三の予言」である。
